With a strong desire to explore the world, geologist Ben McGee captures extraordinary moments in everyday life from around the world in his first solo exhibition of photography, Wanderlust.
Ben McGee is a PhD candidate in geology at the University of Adelaide. He is investigating how the continents were connected long ago in a single land mass. In the past two years his research has taken him to remote parts of the world including deserts, rainforests and rural villages in Namibia, India, Brazil and Vietnam.
The colourful and spontaneous photographs in Wanderlust have emerged from these visits and reflect Ben's love of exploring human connection: to one another, to our surroundings and to everyday life.
A construction worker breaking for lunch in India, a group of boisterous youths travelling through rural Brazil and early dawn in a Vietnamese bakery, Ben's photographs tell the stories of everyday life within a range of cultures.
Discovering and capturing spontaneous moments of intensity, colour, movement, emotion and texture in remote parts of the world has given me a new way of looking at the world and its people, said Ben McGee. Photographing these moments provided me with unique opportunities to interact with the local people in a real way.
Ben's wanderlust and capturing of human connections will continue this year as he travels throughout Cuba in July, and later to Brazil for further geology fieldwork.
