Newmatilda.com's Editor Marni Cordell's editorial today (27 May 2010) announced the end of this most readable and insightful website is nigh. In fact the end, is on 25 June 2010.
In 2007 Newmatilda.com made the decision to drop subscriptions in an effort to boost their readership and with a view to increase their revenue from advertising. Over the past few years the political alternative to reading the daily papers started to gain greater numbers of readers (hits to their site)many who returned regularly for news and analysis or subscribed to the daily email updates. Current Affairs programs such as The Insiders on ABC TV certainly raised their profile a little as well, as their reportage started to offer some off the side type insights into current affairs.
Unfortunately, the drive towards increasing their advertising revenue has not raised enough and the site, which operates on a very tight budget to begin with is choking.
Editor Cordell says they know this decision will disappoint the many people who have supported them over the years, and yes, it will.
It was always worth reading the coverage they provided, often by new and fresh reporters who had cut their teeth in University Papers and Community Radio Station Current Affairs programs such as The Wire (2SER FM, Radio Adelaide).
So if you have not had a good look, or a look at all - sadly, you better do it now! Check out the site and read the full editorial while you are there.
"Dear readers,
It's with heavy hearts that we announce the end of newmatilda.com: the site will cease publishing on Friday, 25 June.
What's brought us to this? The short answer is: we've run out of money.
It probably won't surprise you to learn that newmatilda.com has never operated on a profit. However, we had projected that the site would break even by 2010.
We've now come to realise we were being too optimistic and that we're unable to continue publishing into the next financial year. This is in large part due to the sheer difficulty of selling online advertising in the current media environment"
