UpstART 2010

February 27th 2010 01:37
: UpstART 2010
UpstART is a long running Adelaide Fringe initiative offering emerging South Australian artists the chance to explore their creative ideas and present them in a highly supportive environment.

Participants are assisted by respected, practicing artists who have registered events in the Fringe Festival, receiving feedback and encouragement as they develop their performance, from conception to realisation.

UpstART 2010 is another exciting Fringe opportunity this time in Rymill Park

The Adelaide Fringe and the Helpmann Academy for the Visual & Performing Arts have teamed up once again to present UpstART 2010, a unique program that pairs emerging artists with established Fringe performers to develop and present a three night season of shows in the Fringe Artists Bar.

In 2010, three UpstART placements have been made available to Helpmann Academy students and graduates (up to three years out) from all of its partner schools, as part of a continuing augmentation of the Academy's Ashington Mentorship Scheme. Participants and their mentors include:

Adelaide College of the Arts graduate Lisa Lonero will be mentored by Helen Stratman from the UK performance company Cocoloco. Lisa has developed a contemporary dance work titled Portal (Threshold), an eight-minute work featuring three emerging dancers.

Cocoloco is a performance company based in London, run by Trevor Stuart and Helen Stratman. The group specialises in dramatic and comical street actions based on eccentric or stereotypical characterisation and in bizarre and shocking theatre shows.

Cocoloco believe in the possibility that visual art and entertainment can join in harmony in most public situations, in a manner that can be understood by all ages and nationalities. The aim is to amuse but always with an intelligent structure; it may seem like simple fun but there will always be a hidden layer of sophistication.

Elder Conservatorium of Music Honours student Bella Jedrzejczak will be mentored by Stephen Noonan from Carclew Youth Arts, presenting A bit of Bella a musical story featuring a selection of Bellas favourite songs illustrating her passion for music and performing.

Stephen Noonan is a circus performer, dancer and arts educator with over 15 years experience. With a Bachelor of Arts in Educational Theatre, he was the winner of the 2008 Education and Arts Ministers' Award for an artist working with students and teachers.

Having performed throughout Australia and overseas, Stephen has also taught circus and dance workshops at schools all over Adelaide and throughout South Australia. He has performed in shows at Come Out, the Adelaide Festival and the Adelaide Fringe.

Stephen is currently working with Carclew Youth Arts as part of their Playfull program.

Flinders Drama Centre student Kym Begg presents a seven minute physical comedy performance titled Madame Bells Fried Delights, with the assistance of mentor Llysa Holland and Andrew Litzky from Theatre Simple in Seattle. This self-devised, imaginative set cleverly recreates the sights, sounds, sensations and sizzle of a chaotic yum cha kitchen.

An award-winning, internationally acclaimed performance company, Theater Simple was founded with the aim of stripping the theatrical experience down to its elemental parts: the imagination of the actor and audience, the playwright's words and the director's vision.

Performing and touring internationally since 1991, Theater Simple has participated in international arts festivals in Asia, Australia and the United States. The group was the winner of the prestigious Grand Prize for Artistic Excellence at the 1996 Adelaide Fringe Festival, and their production of The Master & Margarita was named one of three Best Plays during the 1998 Adelaide Fringe.

Llysa Holland (performer) and Andrew Litzky (stage manager) are both co-founders of Theater Simple.

UpstART 2010 will be presented in the Fringe Artists' Bar in Rymill Park.

8:30pm to 9:30pm, March 3, 4 and 5
