Under the Banyan Tree exhibition presents work created or inspired during seven artists' residency at Sanskriti Kendra, Delhi (India).
A huge Banyan tree sits at the entrance of Sanskriti Kendra artist retreat, welcoming its many visitors, artists in residence, students and conference attendees. From October to November 2007, seven artists from the Helpmann Academy's visual art partner schools were welcomed to Sanskriti Kendra for a six-week residency.
Fran Callen, Gus Clutterbuck, Peter Fraser, Samantha Jeffries, Marie Littlewood, Meghan O'Rourke and Laura Wills undertook the six-week residency through funding and support from the Helpmann Academy.
Emersed in such a strong, diverse and welcoming culture, the artists now present a rich response to their experience in Under the Banyan Tree exhibition. Work is presented in ceramics, jewelery, drawing, textiles, sculpture and mixed media.
Fran Callen's drawings created with ink, watercolours and local materials such as bindi dust and chai tea; depict the gritty reality of Indian street life along with the beauty and extravagance of an Indian wedding. Fran says, I have a genuine interest in developing and encouraging a deeper understanding of different cultures. I hope to increase and to spread that understanding through my artwork and through community arts projects.
Exposed to new ways of working, seeing and being, in the highly populated and incredibly colourful country, the artists have eagerly responded to their new experiences through their artwork in Under the Banyan Tree.
