REVIEW
True Dare Kiss is a series available on DVD worth watching. When I first took a look at the cover I kind of cringed and thought "Oh no, not another BBC family drama" but then I watched it.
From UK playwright Debbie Horsfield, True Dare Kiss is freely adapted form her 1985 stage play of the same name. It is a comic but disturbing family drama set in Manchester that slowly unfolds into a saga of intrigue, passion, revenge, redemption and belly-laughs.
After a death in the family, four sisters and their brother are reunited after 20 years, each with a memory of a horrific incident that happened in their youth.
It takes it's time to suck you in by introducing disparate activities going on and slowly starts to create a strong impression. The characters are fascinating. Here's a family, mainly of women (daughters) who are adults and evenly placed along a line of behaviours that seems pretty normal. However once you start to join the dots you get nothing like a straight line.
Perhaps the most entertaining and unexpected aspect of this show is that nothing you think you understand ends up being actual.
It's a combination of mystery, characters who are easy to dislike (that grow on you for all the right reasons) and some very smart writing. The cast are quite believable as a family, and the sets are impressive.
I give it a mighty thumbs up.
There's plenty around about it on the net, so if you are interested - have a look.
