Review | Julia Zemiro's Comfort Zone!

February 27th 2010 02:04
: The Famous Spiegeltent
Category: Get out
Julia Zemiro is a very natural talent. Her work on television is closer to doing a gig in a tent than most, so she fits right in with the whole Festival idea of getting it on in a room with a bar up the back. Her show is great and will obviously depend a lot on the guests, as they are the ones who ultimately deliver in this format; rather than Julia Zemiro, who remains a host, nothing more or less - a gracious and gorgeous host.

Clare Bowditch on opening night was a complete wonder and delight. Her voice is beautiful, her personality quite on the divine scale in a very grounded and down to earth way. Truly delightful.

The venue need to think through a few things though. The Famous Spiegeltent sits beside the Torrens looking great, but there is no shade provided for the long line up and wait with the sun blistering at you. The folk who wrangled the crowd waiting patiently were ignorant of several things, occupational health and safety, duty of care and manners to list a few right off the top of my head.

A woman in her third trimester asked about seating and was told I dunno by an usher who has been there at least two days. Another usher requests people go find some shade - but hey, this is Adelaide the shadeless city.

I think they need to seriously work out a more acceptable game plan around meeting and greeting people.

Having a Spruiker suddenly burst into a charged up line up line up sort of rant to a large group who have been standing politely in the blazing sun for twentyfive minutes is not such a great deal
, I felt like slapping him.

The show was great, but remember to slip slop slap before you go - you may get quite frazzled waiting around the shadeless space they want you to wait in.

Known for her spontaneity and grace on RocKwiz and Thank God You're Here, Julia Zemiro now comes to The Famous Spiegeltent in Elder Park for Julia Zemiro's Comfort Zone - a brand new show commissioned by the Adelaide Festival and directed by Patrick Nolan.

Each night Julia Zemiro will reveal and introduce a musical guest 'in the zone' to chat about the music and experiences that have shaped their life and career. Backed by the great musical talents of James Black, Peter Luscombe and Mark Ferrie (aka The RocKwiz Orkestra), each guest will reinterpret songs by artists who have influenced their music, as well as perform some of their own signature tunes.

Adelaide Festival Artistic Director Paul Grabowsky said Julia Zemiro's Comfort Zone allows audiences to find out a little bit more about some fantastic musicians in a new and intimate setting.

"I've always been interested in why people do what they do and what their processes are. People who love music but don't necessarily play it themselves also like to be let into the 'trade secrets' of people they admire," he said.

"In this new show, Julia Zemiro leads the audience into the inner working life of a performer,
brought to them through the medium of Julia's wit, skill and charm."
