Margie Fischer's parents were Austrian Jews who fled from Vienna to China to escape the Holocaust. After ten years living in Shanghai they came to Australia as refugees. Margie lived with her extended family in the house her father built in East Lindfield, Sydney. Her grandparents died there, so did her young brother. When both her parents also died Margie was left to clear out the family home.
While sorting through the house over a six month period, in which very little had been thrown out in forty years, she became fascinated with what is left when loved ones die. Throughout this time she documented her feelings and the processes involved.
The Dead Ones was first presented as a work in progress at the 2009 Adelaide Feast Festival.
