StillContemporary Paper Installation by Amalia Alpareanu
1 to 17 August 2008
Artlab Australia, 70 Kintore Ave, Adelaide
Opening: 6pm Friday 1 August.
Guest Speaker: Mary Knights - Director, South Australian School of Art Gallery
Quiet. Calm. Silent.. Still is a contemplative exhibition of contemporary works on paper by Amalia Alpareanu.
Amalia is an Adelaide based artist currently studying Art History and Theory at the South Australian School of Art, UniSA. With a love of paper, both new and old, Amalia also works as a paper conservator at the State Library of South Australia.
The artworks in the exhibition are made from recycled Japanese tissue paper (a material also used in conservation) and handmade paper made from recycled cotton and plant fibres.
This installation includes an array of materials, weighty and weightless, smooth or crumpled, delicately webbed or translucent, natural or dyed. Together with the surrounding air and light the works create unusual in-between worlds, spaces and textural effects. Artist; Amalia Alpareanu
Amalia has a fascination with light, texture and contrast and is often mesmerized by their play with objects to create different dimensions. She uses the effects of light and texture throughout her work to reflect her focus on simplicity, calm, contemplation and stillness.
Held in Artlab, the exhibition makes reference to the detailed and delicate work performed by the conservators of Artlab.
The South Australian School of Art is a Helpmann Academy partner school.
