Students and staff from the University of Adelaide's Elder Conservatorium of Music and TafeSA's Adelaide College of the Arts have come together to present a production of Stephen Sondheim's fairytale musical Into the Woods.
The singers and orchestra for the production have been drawn from students at the Elder Conservatorium, while the theatre and rehearsal space as well as the technical, lighting and sound expertise will be provided by the Adelaide College of the Arts.
Inspired by Bruno Bettelheim's 1976 book The Uses of Enchantment, this fairytale musical incorporates the plots from a number of Brothers Grimm stories, including Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel and Cinderella.
These narratives are tied together by a more original story involving a baker, his wife and their quest to begin a family. Into the Woods is cleverly written, dramatically challenging and highly appealing to the audience and performers.
Stuart Maunder - former Artistic Administrator and Executive Producer of Opera Australia - will be contributing to the project in a professional consulting capacity, offering valuable constructive critique and feedback in the crucial rehearsal stages of the production.
Into the Woods has been supported by a Helpmann Academy grant.
The Helpmann Academy for the Visual & Performing Arts assists emerging artists to make the leap into professional practice, by providing a range of programs and opportunities including exhibitions, awards, grants, mentorships and international exchanges. The Academy's partners are TafeSA - the Adelaide College of the Arts and Vizarts O'Halloran Hill; University of South Australia - South Australian School of Art; University of Adelaide - Elder Conservatorium; Flinders University - Flinders Drama & Flinders Screen Production; Adelaide Central School of Art.
