SARAH WATERS at Writers Week

February 11th 2010 15:35
: SARAH WATERS is visiting Adelaide
3 x Man Booker shortlisted author
SARAH WATERS is
visiting Adelaide and Canberra

Sarah will be attending the Adelaide Writers Festival and speaking at events in Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne 21 Feb - 7 March

Sarah Waters is perhaps the most well-known lesbian writer today and burst onto the literary scene in 1998 with her debut novel Tipping the Velvet, which was made into a TV series for the BBC. She continued writing in the Victorian era for Affinity (1999) and Fingersmith (2002), which have also been made into TV series. Fingersmith earned her a place on the Man Booker Prize shortlist, as did The Night Watch four years later. The Little Stranger, published this March in paperback, was also shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize for fiction. From this wonderful writer who continues to astonish us, now comes a chilling ghost story. Prepare yourself!

Forgive me in advance for this rant, but I hate the fact that Sarah Waters is characterised as a 'lesbian writer'. Yes, she is a lesbian in her personal life, and she explores that in her writing as well, but saying that she's a 'lesbian writer' carries an implicit suggestion that she somehow can't stand on her own merits simply as 'a writer'. She can, and does. You don't get people labelling Oscar Wilde or Truman Capote as 'gay writers'.

Lest you think I'm blaming you here, that really isn't the case. This label has been perpetuated for years now. I'm glad to hear that she's coming out to Australia though. She's one of only a handful of current writers about whom I am genuinely enthusiastic.
