Le Grand Macabre
Ligeti's Masterpiece

A co-production of the Theatre Royal de la Monnaie, Brussel; English National Opera, London; Gran Teatro de Liceu, Barcelona and Teatro de Liceu, Barcelona and Teatro dell'Opera di Roma SPAIN, BELGIUM, ITALY, UK

There is so much to enjoy in this opera. The visual wonder of the great puppet on stage is a mighty treat. Projections and lighting effects douse her, film is played over her - there is a palpable life before you on the stage. It left me in some wonderment. I was enchanted by it. Great puppet! Bravo.

The music was very enjoyable. Sometimes modern opera can be a little harsh on the ear but I very much enjoyed the crazy discordance and fine melodies here. Ultimately the story is quite mental, but very profound. Enjoy life to the full because we could all die tomorrow.

Fantastic performances from the ensemble and I have to say the costumes
by Lluc Castells were outstanding. Nothing to fault in this engaging and sometimes hysterically funny show.
