ENSALADA AT THE UNION
RELOCATING TO RYMILL PARK

Hot new Fringe venue, Ensalada at the Union, will be relocating to Rymill Park in time for the Festival's opening this weekend.

The venue will host more than 20 of the most experienced, skilled and exotic performers of the 2013 Adelaide Fringe and will bring together a number of art genres, including French cabaret, jazz, dance, theatre and singer/song writers.

Organisers initially had approval to operate the venue down Union Street in the East End each day until 3am, which required the street to be closed for a five-week period. However, Adelaide City Council staff have since reviewed the permit and found that it was not in line with Council policy for street-closures.

"The initial approval didn't comply with our Road Closure Policy, which only allows for short term road closures and unfortunately approval was given as a result of an administrative error within Council," Council CEO Peter Smith Said.

"The decision to reopen Union St was not made as a result of complaints from the East End Coordinator Group (EECG) or the Maras Group, but because the proposal did not comply with our Road Closure Policy. All the EECG and Maras Group did was alert us to the error that had been made."

"We are now working hard to make sure Ensalada is a massive success and the talk of Fringe for all the right reasons. We agreed that Rymill Park was the most appropriate site for their venue and we're assisting the organisers in getting the new site set up in time for this weekend."

"We're committed to balancing the needs of the event organisers, city users and surrounding businesses and residents, especially given its close proximity to residential apartments and the need to provide access for a number of businesses and properties in the area," he added.

"The venue is a fantastic concept and is an example of the kind of vibrant activity we want to see more of in the city - I will be joining the Lord Mayor at 5pm on Saturday to open the event and I encourage everyone to check it out during the Fringe!"

The venue will open from 5pm this Saturday and is located in Rymill Park, just next door to the Fringe Club, off Rundle Road.

Council administration will do a full review of the processes that took place in the initial permit approval and will continuously strive to improve internal processes.
