The realist figurative charcoal drawings in this solo exhibition by Kim Buck explore the idea of 'conatus' a Latin word describing the innate vital force of a being to continue to endeavour.
Initially beginning as a very personal response to life circumstances, Kim Buck's drawings have become an exploration of the emotional and physical limits of individuals operating within contemporary society.
Kim Buck said, "We live in troubling global times. Individually it is easy to feel that we are incapable of exerting any significant control over our existences, but instead we are being governed by forces that are ultimately indifferent to our human struggles. I am interested in the metaphorical space in which balance has been disrupted and we are faced with the choice to hold on or let go."
Kim is an emerging artist currently in her final year of study at the South Australian School of Art. Since stumbling upon a love of drawing several years ago Kim has been a regular exhibitor around Adelaide. Her first solo exhibition in 2006 was followed by a sell out solo show, armed and empty handed during the 2008 SALA Festival.
Kim has also participated in several group exhibitions including Chain of 77 in the 2008 Fringe Festival. Early this year Kim was selected as one of fifteen finalists in the 2009 National Youth Self Portrait Prize which was exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra. She has recently been selected as a finalist for the Prospect Portrait Prize worth $5,000.
