The Playground Contemporary Dance Company presents a poignant and playful showcase of three original dance performances at this year's Adelaide Fringe Festival, titled Capture.
Taking place at Colour Cosmetica a trendy salon and hairdressing academy by day this new work is a dynamic exploration of Playground's fears, distractions and influences, with themes covering claustrophobia, confinement, framing and manipulated memory.
Each of Playground's founders - Kate Skully, Tess Appleby and Rhiannon Davis have sought to find their own choreographic voice in creating these three short dance pieces.
When discussing our choice of theme, we all came up with similar concepts that seemed to be based around the idea of capture, says Kate Skully from Playground. The three pieces examine different aspects of this concept; Tess explores the notion of being captured, Rhiannon explores the capture of characters in an explosion of movement, while I have focussed on the moment between capturing a photograph and the manipulated memory it can capture.
Tess, Rhiannon and Kate first worked together on Interrobang for the 2007 Fringe Festival. The group then branched out to form Playground, receiving rave reviews for their successful performance Wearing Away Our Lips at last year's Fringe. All three dancers graduated from the Adelaide Centre for the Arts in 2005.
