Garden of Unearthly Delights
ONE TRICK PONY
presents
PEEP
A continuous show at the Peep Tent, Garden of Unearthly Delights $6 (for 5 minutes)
The Garden of Unearthly Delights is a messy rambling noisy affair, just as you'd expect of a carnival sitting on the edge of the Adelaide Fringe. It attracts young folk out for a good time as well as family groups and the more corageous singles set looking for something different. Last night as I waited for the first showings of PEEP to start I listened to Shane the "Space Cowboy" spruik his freak show for all it is worth to the passing crowd; some of the passers by stopped and joined the modest line up willing to pay six dollars for a look at a "beautiful duckling with one cute head and two bodies," and the albino crocodile.
PEEP is something a little more exotic than the local dead freak in a jar exhibition; it provides an interactive experience for the audience with trained performers.
You line up, pay your paltry six dollars and get five minutes to peep through a curtain with the rest of the tiny audience and watch two characters strut the stuff that bad dreams are made of. Are these two likely lads actually lads or are they ladies? You be the judge. One Trick Pony is a small outfit combining circus skills and dance that brings possibly the most intimate show to the Fringe here in the Garden.
The tent is about as big as a bathroom and the cast are a mere two on the inside and two on the outside. You get five minutes of peeping time for your money, but the show is about an hour long so you can go back for more if you want to continue peeping through the hole in the curtain; you'll only need to pay again and line up to wait your turn.
The portion of the show I saw had nudity, acrobatics, satire and gender bending all rolled into a highly entertaining few minutes - five to be exact. The performers were a complete treat providing eye contact with the peepers and enjoying the sporadic yelps and cheers from their small but appreciative audience.
The big question is how many fellows out therewill part with almost eighty dollars to see if these two gender bending performers will go all the way with eachother in the little tent?
I left with the feeling that it wouldn't be out of the question for some.
