MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL COMEDY FESTIVAL PRESENTS
JAMIE KILSTEIN
REVENGE OF THE SERFS
2 - 13 MARCH
NOVA CINEMA
This is a fresh new accent and voice in the Fringe tribe of comedians who troll over here to warm up for the International Melbourne Comedy Festival. He is not gay, yet he can see the discriminating homophobic hatred gushing from certain American politicians, so he has words to say about it. And what great political angst. What torrents of nerve and amusement. This guy is funny. He is unknown around Adelaide, first time here - and he's playing the difficult Palace Cinema where the carpet everywhere, on the floor, stairs, walls, deadens the sound and makes it feel kind of distant.
But Jamie broke through that stuperfying numbness and had the audience really laughing with him on so many occassions it became difficult to hear the next laughable thing.
His is a rapid fire comedy that takes no prisoners and avoids calling you all hostages. The hour and a bit buzzed by so fast, you may have to go skulking around the Rhino Room and catch him there. Word on the street is he has a few gigs tucked in there - and that's great because it's a venue made for comedy.
David Jobling
He has emerged from the New York underground as one of its most powerful and clever voices, slicing and dicing and char-grilling public hypocrisy, serving it up as a tasty banquet. Pulling watertight arguments from his terrifying first-hand experiences of the American religious right, mild mannered Jamie has confronted the likes of bottle-throwing, racist homophobes in Texas.
Melbourne got a generous helping of his delicious comedy dishes last year, and now he's ready to give Adelaide the first bite of his new show, coming direct from Edinburgh.
This time round, Jamie's got his sights set on the man he publicly pushed for president. With needlepoint accuracy, he intricately weaves musings over why America may have elected the black guy, but they're still screwing over the rest of the world. Just because Obama is cool does't make him unanswerable to Jamie's quick-fire virtuoso diatribes.
As fellow comedian Tim Minchin so eloquently stated, Jamie Kilstein is at once irresistibly endearing and wonderfully audacious. Watching his work is like going to cuddle a puppy and having it hump your leg. But funnier.

A most charming and politically astute fellow, really good for a chat and a new accent to enjoy.

Those who like their comedy passionate, political and delivered like machine gun-fire are in for a treat.
