All art is magical in origin
For some, this statement holds incredible truth.

As one of two South Australian artists selected to exhibit at Sydney's Firstdraft Gallery in the opening half of 2010, Celeste J Aldahn will use this opportunity to explore the more magical influences of her creative practice.

Stemming from an avid fascination with all things magic, this self-confessed pre-teen witch will exorcise her occult-compulsions through playful sculptural objects, drawings, photography and installation. Knitted fluorescent dreamcatchers, haphazardly bejewelled and dangling alongside images of captured auras and satanic tattoos; the totemic components of Hardcore Folklore will weave an insight into the worlds we create through our beliefs.

Opening on February 10, the exhibition runs consecutively for three weeks alongside work by Melbourne artists Craig Dermody, Michael Pryor and Lachlan Conn.

Celeste J Aldahn is an undergraduate of the South Australia School of Art. Having been actively exhibiting within her local arts community for several years, she now offers her national debut with Hardcore Folklore. The exhibition has been supported by a Helpmann Academy grant.

The Helpmann Academy for the Visual & Performing Arts assists emerging artists to make the leap into professional practice, by providing a range of programs and opportunities including exhibitions, awards, grants, mentorships and international exchanges. The seven partner schools that make up the Academy are the Adelaide Centre for the Arts and Vizarts O’Halloran Hill (tafeSA); Adelaide Central School of Art; Elder Conservatorium of Music (University of Adelaide); Flinders Drama & Screen Production (Flinders University) and South Australian School of Art (UniSA).
