Nescha Jelk wins $5,000 Bendigo and Adelaide Bank Award
Emerging South Australian director Nescha Jelk has been chosen as the winner of the 2011 Bendigo and Adelaide Bank Award. This $5,000 encouragement award is presentedto one outstanding graduate artist from nominees from each of the Helpmann Academy's partner institutions.
Nescha isto be presented with her award at the Helpmann Academy's Maestros & Apprentices Glamour on the High Seas dinner on Friday May 20 at the Adelaide Convention Centre.
Graduating from the Flinders Drama Centre in 2010, Nescha is a lively and engaging artist. Her fresh approach todirecting is imaginative and inventive, earning high praise from her lecturersand industry colleagues she has worked with. NeschaÂs work responds both to thedemands of the script she is working with as well as to the interests of heraudience.
During her time at Flinders Drama Centre, Nescha directed and designed numerous stageproductions including Raimondo Cortese's 'Roulette' series (supervised by Sam Haren), David Williamson's Third World Blues and Polly Stenham's Tusk Tusk. Nescha has also served as Assistant Director to Corey McMahon on five.point.one's 2009 production of Osama the Hero at the Bakehouse Theatre and to Catherine Fitzgerald on Tony McNamara's The Give and Take, produced by the State Theatre Company of South Australia.
Through its sponsorship of this award for an emerging arts graduate, Bendigo and Adelaide Bank aims to provide meaningful support for talented South Australians pursuing a career in the arts. The award-winner is chosen from a select field ofoutstanding 2010 graduates from each of South Australia's major arts institutions: Adelaide College of the Arts (TAFE SA), Adelaide Central Schoolof Art, Elder Conservatorium of Music (University of Adelaide), Flinders ScreenProduction and Drama Centre (Flinders University), South Australian School ofArt (UniSA) and Vizarts, OÂHalloran Hill (TAFE SA).
"Nesha is apassionate and dedicated emerging South Australian artist, and her particular skill as a director is truly exceptional. We are very proud to support and encourage her in her future endeavours," says Richard Fennell, Chief Financial Officer, Bendigo and Adelaide Bank. Proceeds from the Maestros & Apprentices black-tie dinner - this year themed Glamour on the High Seas -provide significant benefits to students and recent graduates from the Helpmann Academy's partner institutions, by assisting with funding for projects,facilitating visiting artists, student exchanges and creating performance and exhibition opportunities both in Australia and abroad.
