Monkey Bar Mafia - a new short film produced and filmed in South Australia, will have its Australian premiere screening next month at the historic Capri Theatre in Goodwood.
Written and directed by Flinders Screen Production graduates Brendon Skinner and Simon Williams, Monkey Bar Mafia tells the story of Jet, the new kid on the block who discovers a gang of rebellious ten year-olds on his first day at Camarilla College. It soon becomes clear that he is the missing piece in their plan to steal the greatest football card of all time.
The comedy/drama stars Nicholas Pernini, Brandon Scane and Carina Gunn, and features a cast of more than 60 primary school-aged children. The film's producer - Flinders Screen Production graduate Megan Huitema - admits working with such a large (and young) cast was rather ambitious, but says she and her film crew found the project very rewarding.
We were all very excited by the prospect of working on such an extensive production. It was a new challenge for all of us, particularly for the younger cast members who had never set foot on a film set. It has been such a fun project to be involved in, and I feel privileged to have worked with such amazingly talented and creative people.
Monkey Bar Mafia was made with the support of a The Helpmann Academy grant and included crew members from Flinders Screen Production, Adelaide University Media, the Elder Conservatorium of Music and the Media Make-up Academy, along with a number of industry professionals.

The Helpmann Academy for the Visual & Performing Arts assists emerging artists to make the leap into professional practice, by providing a range of programs and opportunities including exhibitions, awards, grants, mentorships and international exchanges. The seven partner schools that make up the Academy are the Adelaide College of the Arts and Vizarts OÂHalloran Hill (tafeSA); Adelaide Central School of Art; Elder Conservatorium of Music (University of Adelaide); Flinders Drama & Screen Production (Flinders University) and South Australian School of Art (UniSA).
