Visual artist Angela Black presents a new collection of paintings exploring the unique personalities and identities of apes.
Titled Metaphysical Ape, Angela's latest body of work is the beginning of a new line of investigation, in part a response to current theories and debates surrounding chimpanzees, but largely an exploration of a subject matter that is a constant source of fascination and interest to the artist. Drawing on her own experiences, thoughts and feelings, Angela's portraits are the product of hours of observation at the Monarto zoo, offering a unique glimpse into the unique personalities of these wonderful animals.
Graduating from the Adelaide Central School of Art in 2007, Angela has exhibited in numerous group and solo exhibitions across Australia. In 2008, Angela's work was featured in the 2008 Helpmann Academy Graduate Exhibition, as well as at Hatched at the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts. Angela was a finalist in the 2007 Waterhouse Natural History Art Prize, and was the winner of the SA Life Emerging Artist Award (SpringART) in 2009.

My motivation for Metaphysical Ape is derived from a long-standing fascination that I have had with primates, particularly apes. I have spent many hours just watching them and studying them. The paintings can best be described as portraits of chimpanzees, celebrating each unique and individual 'person'ality. Of particular interest to me is the Ape-Human Continuum, and this work, hence the title, Metaphysical Ape, ponders the question what it is to be an ape.
