Hate Preachers in Rundle Mall

September 3rd 2011 08:40
: Disturbing the Peace
City of Churches drowning in 'Christian' Hate

In recent times the Council of the City of Adelaide have banned cigarette smoking in Rundle Mall the major shopping centre in the square mile city. There has been some public debate about the issue, but no organised protests demanding the right to smoke.

It would seem that the public are content to see a ban extended from inside, out into the street. Fair enough. Last night however a large mass of concerned citizens gathered to peacefully protest against the Christian Preachers who regularly stand and proselytise their views in the Mall. If the views actually reflected the mantra Love one another as I have loved you - or - God is love - as his son Jesus is said to have preached there would be no trouble, but these are not peace loving, forgiving Christians, this is the nasty Christian Right.

The slogans and sayings they carry are laced with overt hatred of anyone they deem to be unworthy of God's love including Church Gossips, Abortionists and Homosexuals.

Many of last night's protesters commented on how offensive it is to try and enjoy socialising or shopping in this city's main shopping precinct while having the shouting of a few aggressive men and women pitched at them, calling them sinners and shouting that they will burn in Hell.

Some visitors to Adelaide were astonished to find a mob of colourfully dressed people deliberately ignoring the preachers. It is called the City of Churches, so why don't they preach in the church where their message would suit the desire of the audience? Reasons given for the disruptive preaching essentially centre on telling sinners they are going to go to Hell. If there were a coffee shop called Hell about to open in the Mall this may be one way of building a clientele, but no, it is not an advertising strategy at play here, it is the typical white supremacy evangelical ranting that has been growing in the name of God all around the world. What these people are preaching is hate.

Hate homosexuals, hate non-believers, hate anything and anyone that doesn't fit in their so called Christian dogma.

Many of the peaceful protesters have decided to make their feelings known by deliberately ignoring what they call the Hate Preachers, and they have employed strategies such as surrounding them in order to demonstrate ignoring them. This type of peaceful protest has not been seen in Adelaide's Rundle Mall before. It is a new social development and many suggest it is the only way to get their point across.

There have been calls upon the State Government as well as the City Council requesting that the Hate Preachers be permanently removed. Fair enough on every count. If we are being told it is a non-smoking place in order to encourage more people to visit the failing shopping precinct are we to put up with the Christians screaming at us as if it's a reasonable thing to do? I think not.

I'm very happy (as a smoker) to visit Rundle Mall and shop there as well as comply with the non-smoking rule, but I do not personally wish to be forced to listen to a minority view in such an aggressive manner. The church is supposed to be a family of man where God is love, forgiveness is the way, and love is the answer. At the moment is is one of the last places in the city of churches I would go to do anything because I simply do not want to be subjected to such offensive nonsense. The preaching of hellfire and brimstone has never helped anyone. In fact to point at one extreme, it seems to be an underlying element in the rhetoric of many a serial killer's justification for murdering people.

It will be an extremely quiet shopping precinct in the future if these Hate Preachers are allowed to continue.

End Hate
Possibly the only positive thing to come out of their regular ranting and raving is a motivated groundswell in people peacefully protesting the idiocy of it all.
