Glasslands - an exhibition by Nic Brown
Opening 2pm Saturday 7 August 2010
7 August - 5 September 2010
Palm House, Adelaide Botanic Garden
North Tce, Adelaide, 10-4pm daily
(The Palm House is located west of the lake)
Visual artist Nic Brown presents a new body of work which will be located amongst the garden beds of the historical Palm House at the Adelaide Botanic Garden.
Glasslands is a site specific exhibition that combines the mediums of both painting and installation. Nic has developed 11 works that are not your everyday paintings. They are tiny Madagascan vistas painted onto PVC sheeting and staked into the dirt. The paintings mimic the botanical labels that classify the plant specimens, whilst at the same time offering an alternative view.
Nic's subject matter is informed by the flora housed within the Palm House: the plants are indigenous to the unique arid-land of south-western Madagascar.
Nic says "My romanticised Madagascan landscapes are like little portholes to the world the plants come from. The paintings contextualise the plant specimens within the Palm House, and present the bystander with an opportunity to think about a place foreign to their own."
"Making work for such an unusual venue, rather than a conventional gallery space has been liberating. The paintings are made on PVC instead of canvas, and will be planted into the ground instead of hanging on a wall" says Nic.
As part of SALA Nic will also be presenting her new video, Falling Skies, at the Queens Theatre as part of the SALA Moving Image Project, opening 6pm Saturday 31 July and concludes 14 August 2010.
Since graduating from the Adelaide Central School of Art with Honours in 2008, Nic has exhibited in numerous group and solo exhibitions, and was awarded the Kidman Art Watercolour Prize in 2008.
