FEAST IN THE EAST
:
SA GAY & LESBIAN CULTURE
South Australia offers a cultural FEAST on the East coast. Several South Australian queer artists are set to converge on Melbourne and Sydney in coming months as part of Victoria's premiere queer arts and cultural festival MIDSUMMA and New South Wales' famous NEW MARDI GRAS FESTIVAL.
A Feast in Four Courses will see Feast Festival present four of SA's most outstanding works in dance, music, cabaret and theatre with an eye to increasing the profile of South Australian queer artistic work in the Eastern states. Feast received a $10 000 grant from Arts SA's Building Pathways initiative to enable the project.
The Story of Meredith Crocksley, Libby O'Donovan's sell out success of the Adelaide Cabaret Festival, Adelaide Fringe and Feast, will delve deep into the lives of women in rural Australia through O'Donovan's signature vocal power and quirky telling of tales. O'Donovan will be joined by acclaimed Adelaide musicians Kathie Renner and Karen De Nardi (Vincent's Chair) to create the heartbreaking story of the woman that lives in every small country town.
Eric Kuhlmann's critically acclaimed one man show, I Was a Teenage Dirty Old Man will explore themes of underage sexuality, sex in public places, mental health and environmentalism. Having already wowed audiences in consecutive Feast festivals with his shockingly raw brand of cabaret, Kulhmann is set to get tongues wagging on the Melbourne festival circuit.
Lycra-clad duo, The Bad Father will robot dance their way into the hearts of Melbourne's electro music lovers with their latest offering The Correction Tour. Described as unapologetically forging a new musical genre, this hit of the 2008 Feast Festival promise a glamorous stage spectacular with tongues firmly planted in their cheeks.
Adelaide dancer, Jay Robinson is currently working with choreographers in Sydney to fine tune his solo dance piece Four Faces. Jay will perform the four act epic in Midsumma to explore the concepts of love, desperation, gratification and what it means to be a gay man.
Feast Artistic Director, Daniel Clarke said A Feast in Four Courses is an exciting opportunity to showcase the depth of talent abounding on South Australia's queer community.
One of my goals when I started as Artistic Director of Feast was to export the fantastic work that is developed for Feast and increase the profile of the Festival nationally and internationally. I'm sure there will be interest in the work from national producers who will see the work in Melbourne - and hope the artists get more work from this endeavour.
The Midsumma Festival runs from January 18 until February 8. A Feast in Four Courses will run from January 21 to 25 at Gasworks Arts Park in South Melbourne.
The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival will be held from 14 February to 7 March 2009, and Riverside Theatres is again the hub of activities for Sydney's west. With the 2009 Mardi Gras theme of Nations United, Riverside is hosting a diverse range of Mardi Gras Festival events that will promote diversity, tolerance and a greater awareness of gay culture.
Mardi Gras has grown to become a major cultural event and its appeal stretches well beyond Sydney's gay community. The 2009 Mardi Gras Festival promises to be high quality, high camp and high diversity with three weeks packed full of culture, entertainment and social events.
From dancing the afternoon away with all girl band THE FROCKS, to make-up, frivolity and fancy dress at the COURT OUT! DRAG WORKSHOP, this unique and engaging festival, with various plays, dance works, films and other individual events is a must see addition to Riverside Theatres busy calendar of events.

With 12 events for Riverside Theatres we are hoping to see a large number of people come along who will be participating in Mardi Gras events for the first time; Mardi Gras is now so much a part of the Sydney landscape that involving the greater part of Sydney was a logical next step.
