Out Of Print

13 - 26 February

First floor, 187 Rundle Street, Adelaide

Opens: 6:00pm on Thursday, 12 February
Guest speaker: Michael Bollen, publisher for Wakefield Press

Exhibition hours:
Monday to Friday, 9.30am - 5:00pm

Three visual artists - Sarah-Jane Cook, Billy-Jo Hisgrove and Adrian Caon - will be showcasing a vibrant and thought provoking series of new works inspired and derived from printed materials.

Fruit-of-Happiness-Tree

Titled Out Of Print, the exhibition features three separate bodies of work, each of them diverse in media, theme and concept. The common thread tying these collections together is that each is a representation or reinterpretation of something found in print form.

Printed materials such as newspapers, notebooks, diaries or photographs are an important source of inspiration for many contemporary artists, says Adrian Caon. Because the word print is a major focus of this exhibition, it seemed appropriate for it to be opened by one of Adelaide's major independent publishing houses, and we are extremely grateful to welcome Michael Bollen from Wakefield Press to our opening.

Sarah-Jane Cook's collection is a series of cotton doilies featuring hand-stitched text derived from her collection of everyday notes and an exercise in bookmaking. Billy-Jo Hisgrove presents prints on paper with work based on quirky imagery from newspaper clippings, while colonial photographs taken of Angkor, Cambodia have inspired Adrian Caon's collection of portrait photographs.

All three exhibiting artists are former graduates from three of the Helpmann Academy's partner schools; Adrian Caon from TafeSA's Adelaide Centre for the Arts, Sarah-Jane Cook from the South Australian School of Art and Billy-Jo Hisgrove from TafeSA's Vizarts at O'Halloran Hill.

The Helpmann Academy for the Visual and Performing Arts assists emerging artists to make the leap into professional practice, by providing a range of programs and opportunities including exhibitions, awards, grants, mentorships and international exchanges.
