David Campbell & Cabaret Festival

: News
Adelaide Festival Center CEO and Artistic Director, Douglas Gautier and Adelaide Cabaret Festival Chairman, Frank Ford announced today some major changes to the Adelaide Cabaret Festival. Julia Holt has announced her decision to resign after eight years as Director of the Adelaide Cabaret Festival. Holt's current contract ran until after the 2009 Festival.
"I have reached this decision after deep reflection. From developing the initial idea and after considerable nurturing and fine-tuning, the Adelaide Cabaret Festival is now an internationally acclaimed boutique arts festival. It boasts an enthusiastic and substantial audience base, both locally and from further afield. Artists who have been a part of the Adelaide Cabaret Festival hold it in great affection and the international reputation the Festival has achieved in such a short time is quite remarkable. It has been an honour and absolute delight to have had this opportunity," Holt said.
"Adelaide Festival Centre is well equipped, after eight years of experience, to continue to deliver the Festival with its very distinctive atmosphere" she said.

Frank Ford AM, Chair of the Adelaide Cabaret Festival Committee and initiator of the Festival praised the Festival Centre for the success of the Festival to date. "The Festival Centre, under the artistic leadership of Julia Holt, with her adventurous programming and innovations, has created an international cabaret arts festival that has no equal in the world. So many artists locally, nationally and internationally have expressed their appreciation for the opportunity and encouragement that Julia and her team have provided," Frank said.

"On behalf of the Adelaide Cabaret Festival Committee I wish Julia every success in the future and acknowledge her outstanding achievement, a legacy that will continue to keep South Australia a leader in the arts," he said.

Frank also announced today that the Adelaide Cabaret Festival's Artistic Director will be Adelaide born David Campbell.

"David had originally agreed to direct the 2010 and 2011 Festivals but with the post vacated earlier than anticipated, he has graciously agreed to look after 2009 as well," Frank said.

"David Campbell is internationally recognized as an outstanding exponent of the art of cabaret. His expertise, skills, and artistic leadership will provide an exciting impetus for the growth of the Festival and for the artists involved. His international reputation will further enhance the recognition and the promotion, nationally and internationally, of the Adelaide Cabaret Festival," he said.

David Campbell has continually been described as a world-class performer since he first burst on to the New York cabaret scene over a decade ago. Since then he has continued to go from strength to strength internationally and in Australia. In the past year alone, he has had two platinum selling albums (The Swing Sessions and The Swing Sessions 2), performed a season with Opera Australia and won acclaim from Sondheim himself for his performance of Bobby in a Sydney production of Company.

After his years on the New York stage, David returned to Australia in 1999 to take the role of Johnny O'Keefe in the record breaking rock n' roll musical Shout! He won top musical honours at the 2006 Helpmann Awards as Best Male Actor in a Musical for his performance in Sunset Boulevard. His hugely popular live Swing Sessions tour with a big band has been a sell-out success right across the nation.Douglas Gautier also paid tribute to the role Julia has played in getting the Festival to its enviable position and welcomed David aboard to take it to the next step.

"The Adelaide Cabaret Festival is the best and most comprehensive cabaret festival in the world and it has attracted more than 340,000 attendances and hundreds of sold out performances during its eight years. It is a marquee event for the Adelaide Festival Centre and the State and we are delighted about the State Government's recent announcement of an extra $200,000 to continue its development," Douglas said.

"Julia led the team in building this international event that is clearly a favourite on the Adelaide arts calendar and we thank her and wish her all the very best," he said.

"David Campbell's experience on the cabaret scene in New York and his recent successes stand him in very good stead to take the Adelaide Cabaret Festival on the next step in its journey. We are thrilled that David has agreed to come on board immediately to start work on the 2009 Festival to help us do this,' Douglas said.

David is very excited about building on the Festival's solid foundations.

"To have the opportunity to take the reins of an illustrious festival such as this is exciting, but to do this in my home town is an honor. Julia has left some big shoes to fill, and I look forward to continuing the important and creative work she has started. The Festival Centre has an exceptional team, with who I endeavor to take the Cabaret Festival to the next level," David said.

The 2009 Adelaide Cabaret Festival dates have been set for 5-20 June.
