The Darfur Australia Network (DAN) and Australian Teachers of Media (ATOM) have created an education kit to teach schoolchildren that events and communities that are very far away are still closely connected to us.
Darfur is a region in western Sudan, the biggest country in Africa.
A conflict in Darfur has been ongoing since 2003 and has resulted in thousands of refugees fleeing to safer countries such as Australia.
We encourage all teachers to download and use all or sections of this kit. It is available in full, for free, at metromagazine.com.au.
Click on study guides.
The education kit includes:
lesson plans (2 sets) - one set targets upper-primary students and the other set targets lower- and middle-secondary students;
activity worksheets (2 sets) - one set supports the upper-primary lessons and one set supports the secondary lessons;
resource lists incorporated within lessons;
Peace is Possible in Darfur documentary on DVD posted on request; and
a booking form to arrange speakers at your school.
The aim of the education kit is to assist you to increase student understanding of the Darfur crisis and the experiences of Darfuri refugees, enable the Darfuri community to share stories with the broader Australian community about their experiences, encourage acceptance of diversity and empathy for those who have experienced loss and/or trauma, and promote active citizenship on human rights and refugee rights in the community through purposeful student inquiry.
The Darfur Australia Network is happy to organise members of the Darfuri community and/or a DAN member to speak at your school.
The Darfur Australia Network is a not-for-profit community organisation aiming to raise awareness about the continuing tragedy in the Darfur region of Sudan, to assist in the resettlement of Darfuri refugees and to build solidarity between the Australian people and the people of Darfur.
