Andrew Skinner, General Manager of the Palace Nova Group has sent out this release for people on the Palace Nova mailing list - if you enjoy going to the movies, you should have a look as well.
CHELSEA CINEMA SALE
We, the Palace Nova group, are a national cinema group who have two separate cinema houses in the Adelaide CBD, being AdelaideÂs only City cinemas - in the East End. For many years, we have been looking to establish a strong cinema presence in Adelaide's eastern suburbs and when the Chelsea site was mooted for sale, we decided to partner with the Maras Group (our Rundle Street landlords), to bid for the Chelsea opportunity.
Given the confidentiality provisions surrounding the sale process, we have been unable to publicly unveil our plans for the site - this has been frustrating to say the least. We want the Burnside and the wider Adelaide community to know that, first and foremost, and despite various inaccurate media reporting over many months now, we have always intended to retain the historic Chelsea building, in one piece, including keeping the auditorium in its current (whole) form. Furthermore, it has always been our intention, in conjunction with the Maras Group, to fully upgrade and improve the cinema, both inside and out, and present it as a truly iconic cinema house.
We have a strong affinity to the Art Deco style and would ensure that the building be upgraded (unlike its present condition) as we did to the Walter Burley Griffin's Westgarth Theatre in Melbourne. In addition, our proposal would see us develop the eastern side of the site to add further (smaller) screens to provide a greater choice of films for the community.
The proposed plans for this site would see a modern building developed in sympathy to the grandeur of the existing building. All in all, our objective is to make this site a pivotal hub for the Kensington area and create a truly unique and welcoming cinema experience for all to enjoy. We are confident that the end product would rate highly as a national treasure, something for all South Australians to be proud of. Importantly, we propose to make the cinema available, free of charge, for a number of charities, schools and other organizations and provide a multitude of valuable discounts and concessions. This has all been strongly communicated to the Burnside Council along with our other proposals to better support the community.
We are extremely frustrated with the process and the utter debacle that has ensued and we only wish to make our position clear for the residents of Burnside and the wider community so that they actually have some idea as to what could be under our proposal. We have a chance now to greatly improve the Chelsea site and ensure its future and viability for decades to come and we are committed to making this happen.
Please show your support of this initiative.
