An exciting exhibition of pure abstract paintings by visual artists Nicholas Elliott and Ben Sando opens at the Light Square Gallery in June.
Titled Abstractions, the exhibition highlights two prevailing streams of abstract painting - organicist and mechanicist - and focuses on presenting abstraction as a choice made for its possibilities of liberation.
Nicholas Elliott's paintings are lush, lyrical and almost monochromatic oils on canvas, while Ben Sando's works on large sheets of paper concentrate on non-natural, geometric forms.
Despite this contrast in style, both artists tackle questions of how we use our imagination to perceive and organise reality; what it is to make an image and how the process of image making affirms our humanity.
In recent times the validity of abstraction as a relevant art-form has been questioned - indeed, painting itself has come underi ncreasing pressure from other mediums, such as video, installation and sculpture made from a limitless variety of materials. The rigour of these two artists' approach to the tradition of abstract painting guarantees a compelling exhibition that is sure to generate discussion.
