2009 Birds of the Fleurieu Calendar
Helping protect South Australia's birdlife with a calendar tradition four decades long
It is fitting that the only calendar solely dedicated to capturing the beauty of South Australia's birdlife is sponsored by a truly South Australian business, Keith Bowden Electrical.
43-year-old South Aussie family business KBE, based at St Mary's, is again the proud sponsor of a beautiful calendar uniquely featuring images of SA birdlife - the 2009 Birds of the Fleurieu Calendar. The beauty of the calendar lies not just in the images but also the fact that proceeds go towards the White-bellied Sea Eagle Protection Campaign and Habitat Restoration Project at SeaWings, a Heritage Agreement area at Waitpinga Cliffs on the Fleurieu Peninsula.
KBE has partnered with SA photographer Elizabeth Steele-Collins by sponsoring production of the calendar. The calendar is available now, FREE at KBE's showroom at 1133 South Rd. Each year thousands of vital dollars are put towards the SeaWings Habitat Restoration project through KBE's generous sponsorship of the calendar. The project aims to protect remnant scrub land and re-vegetate using local native plant species to create more natural habitat for wildlife, especially the birds. Work is also continuing on the protection of the last remaining pair of White-bellied Sea Eagles on the Fleurieu, whose nest is at Waitpinga Cliffs.
This is the third year KBE has partnered with Elizabeth Steele-Collins but KBE's annual calendar tradition actually dates back a lot further - as far back as the 1970s KBE has been involved in the production of calendars featuring images of South Australian birds. KBE Company Secretary Trevor Bowden said the company's calendars had been such a popular tradition that there were customers who had habitually collected a calendar from the store for decades.
We do have customers who, for years and years, have always made sure they come in and get a calendar from us, Trevor said. In fact, we've just recently completed a mailout of the 2009 calendars to a whole lot of customers and former customers who can no longer physically get to the store to get one.
All bird photographs in the calendar have been taken at Waitpinga using a Panasonic DMC-FZ50 digital camera from KBE.
Elizabeth Steele-Collins has lived on the Fleurieu Peninsula most of her life and has a huge affinity with its wildlife and passion for its protection. She lives with her husband at their property SeaWings at Waitpinga Cliffs.
The calendar is quite unique in the sense there is no other calendar out there solely featuring images of SA birdlife, said Trevor. The calendar is great both for avid bird lovers and for anyone who cares about the environment and wildlife conservation. As a South Australian business we've always felt it is important for us to be locally-minded and to support local projects.
